WFP is streaming critically needed food assistance to the more than 2 million displaced persons now fleeing renewed fighting in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.
- WFP is leading the United Nations and humanitarian agencies in a new and innovative approach to bringing food, shelter and relief aid to IDPs by establishing humanitarian hubs in safe areas and host communities.
- As of 28 May, WFP has distributed monthly food rations to more than 2.1 million registered internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled renewed fighting in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province. WFP expects to reach 2.4 million IDPs by the end of May.
- Including IDPs who fled fighting earlier this year, the UN estimates that the total number of registered IDPs stands at more than 2.5 million persons.
- A UN Flash Appeal was launched 22 May, asking international donors to provide funding of approximately US$162 million to meet the basic food needs of two and a half million IDPs over two months.
