The Food We Wasteadmin on December 30th, 2008

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) published a groundbreaking report entitled ‘The Food We Waste’ in May 2008. This report highlights some disturbing statistics about food wastage in the UK:

1. A third of purchased food is thrown away- this means 6.7 million tonnes of waste every year!

2. Every household spends £420 on food every year that is thrown out. Households with children waste even more with £610 worth of food thrown out. That is £10 billion of wasted food every year in the UK.

3. Every tonne of food waste is equivalent to 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) being emitted into the atmosphere.

4. It costs local authorities £1 billion to send most of this wasted food to landfill.
